Learning at Home

No one expects parents to act as teachers, or childcare providers, or to be able to provide all the activities that a playgroup and pre-school can. While children gain lots from pre-school, the everyday things that parents and carers do at home have a great impact on their development too.

The document below will provide you with some useful information on how to help young children, aged 2-5, learn and home whilst keeping them safe, interested and excited.

50 Things To Do Before You're 5

Hertfordshire have launched the free ’50 things to do before you are five’ app.  The app provides a library of home learning activities that are either free or very low cost to families in Hertfordshire.

Hertfordshire County Council commissioned the Herts for Learning Early Years team to ensure all activities within the app include links to local services and places to visit and the activities have been designed to support families and focus on developing important early language skills.

The “50 Things” app is free to download through the AppStore or GooglePlay store, just select “Hertfordshire” from the list of regions/cities, or visit                                                                                                                     to download the app.

Once downloaded, the app will offer a list of 50 free or low cost activities (under £20 for a family of 4) for families to enjoy in or around Hertfordshire. The app also offers the ability for families to build a digital memory bank of your child's special moments .
